Story behind this Arpan
Divyagandham

मौलौ गङ्गा शशाङ्कौ करचरणतले शीतलाङ्गा भुजङ्गाः। वामे भागे दयार्द्रा हिमगिरि दुहिता चन्दनं सर्वगात्रम्॥

This śloka describes the Lord's divine coolness. “On His head are the cool Ganga and moon; on his hands and feet, the cool serpents; on his left, the compassionate daughter of the cold-mountain (Parvati); and Chandanam Sarvagātram—His entire body is smeared with cooling Sandalwood paste.” And why Chandan? Because Shiva is the ultimate ascetic, the Lord of Dhyāna (meditation). This sāttvik fragrance calms the fires of the mind, just as it cools the Lord's body. Offering Chandan is to mirror the Lord's own adornment; it stills our agitation and prepares the mind to become a silent, worthy space for his presence.
